More than Coach Training

Building Resilience from the Inside Out

Embedded. Certified. Sustainable.

For years, we’ve been asking an important question:

How do we build more resilient peace officers?

It’s a good question.

But perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.

What if resilience isn’t where we begin?

What if resilience is the natural outcome of leadership?

The more we study leadership, organizational culture, formal professional coach training, and the challenges facing today’s peace officers, the clearer it becomes.

Resilient departments are built by leaders who create the conditions where resilience can thrive.

Resiliency Leadership is the leadership model that creates those conditions and serves as the foundation of our Naitonwide Frist Responder Resiliency Leadership Initiative. At its core is the understanding that resilience is not simply an individual characteristic, but an organizational capability that leaders intentionally build.

It prepares current and emerging leaders to strengthen leadership capacity, create internal systems that support officer wellness, develop future leaders, and build resilient departments from the inside out.

Resiliency Leadership integrates transformational leadership, the 3 C’s of psychological hardiness, and formal professional coach training into a practical leadership model for public safety. This leadership coach approach equips leaders to identify, implement, and sustain the internal initiatives and leadership systems that strengthen resilience throughout the department.

Why Formal Coach Training?

Formal coach training is what transforms Resiliency Leadership from a philosophy into a practical leadership model.

Transformational leadership teaches leaders WHAT effective leadership looks like.

Psychological hardiness explains WHY people become resilient.

Formal coach training teaches leaders HOW to develop these qualities in other people.

We developed the First Responder Resiliency Leadership Certification (FRRLC) because becoming a Resiliency Leader requires formal coach training. Through this 85-hour International Coach Federation (ICF) Level 1 approved professional coach certification, current and emerging leaders gain the coaching competencies needed to implement the Resiliency Leadership model, strengthen leadership capacity, and build department-wide systems that support emotional recovery and resilient departments.

Leadership Coach Approach to Building Resiliency

Supporting the Unique Needs of First Responders

First responders operate in continuous high-stress and crisis environments that create long-term mental, emotional, and physical strain. How leaders guide, support, and develop their people directly impacts an officer’s ability to perform, recover, and remain resilient over time.

A coaching-based leadership approach—supported by research and applied practice, including recommendations from Walter Reed National Military Medical Centerstrengthens leadership effectiveness, supports emotional recovery, and helps close the resiliency training gap common in high-stress professions.

The Elias Institute of Professional Coaching delivers formal coach training and leadership development that embeds professionally trained coaches within the department—both as leaders using coaching skills and as dedicated internal coaches— creating a sustainable internal leadership capability that enables departments to develop their own people, strengthen officer wellness, and build resilience from within long after the initial training is complete.

Building Resiliency Leadership Capacity Supports Emotional Recovery

A Leadership Coach Approach to Fostering Emotional Recovery

First responders are repeatedly exposed to high-stress environments, critical incidents, social unrest, and natural disasters that create cumulative mental and emotional strain over the course of a career. Supporting long-term resilience requires more than helping individuals manage stress—it requires leaders who know how to foster emotional recovery as an ongoing part of everyday leadership.

Building this capability begins by providing leaders with formal coach training that equips them with the knowledge and skills to guide, support, and develop their people. As leaders apply these coaching skills throughout the department, they create an environment where first responders learn that emotional recovery is not about returning to who they were before the stressors of the job—it is about using the stressors of the job to become stronger, wiser, and better prepared for what comes next.

To support this approach, the program integrates two complementary specializations: Resiliency Leadership® and Emotional Recovery for Crisis Response®. Together, they provide leaders with the competencies, tools, and coaching framework to build resilient departments while supporting the ongoing emotional recovery of the people they lead.

Be the leader others remember. Leave a legacy that outlives your career.

Nationwide First Responder Resiliency Leadership Initiative

Be part of the inaugural nationwide initiative implementing a leadership coach approach to building resilient departments.

The First Responder Resiliency Leadership Certification (FRRLC) is an 85hr. International Coach Federation (ICF) Level 1 approved formal professional coach certification that prepares current and emerging leaders to implement the Resiliency Leadership model within their departments by creating a department-wide leadership structure that supports emotional recovery and resilience.

Taking a systems approach, this initiative brings together a limited number of sworn officers, retired officers, mental health professionals, and professional coaches to implement a leadership coach approach for building resilient departments.

Rather than another one-time training program, this initiative is designed to build sustainable internal leadership capacity by preparing participants to implement the Resiliency Leadership model within their own departments and communities.

The result is an internal leadership structure that supports officer wellness, develops future leaders, strengthens organizational culture, and builds and sustains resilience over time.

The inaugural cohort is intentionally limited to 350 participants to ensure meaningful collaboration, research, and implementation as participants help establish, evaluate, and refine the Resiliency Leadership model and leadership coach approach for building resilient departments.
